Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been ranked as the 39th most powerful woman by Forbes.

The list titled “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women” was published by the magazine on its website on Tuesday.

Last year, her position was 29th.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel retained the top position on the list for the 10th consecutive year, followed by Christine Lagarde, president of European Central Bank in the second and Kamala Harris, US vice president-elect in the third position.

Sheikh Hasina is the longest serving prime minister in the history of Bangladesh. She is currently serving her fourth term.

She won the fourth term, which is also her third consecutive term, after her party Awami League won 288 of the 300 parliamentary seats in the 11th general election held in December 2018.

Forbes said the prime minister believes this will be her final term and she is focusing on issues such as food security and access to education and healthcare.

In the prime minister’s profile, the magazine said Sheikh Hasina is working to establish a firm democracy in Bangladesh.
