Lawlessness prevails in Bangladesh, police official beaten to death by staffers of Dhaka mental hospital

In a sign of lawlessness and the government’s alleged failure to ensure security of citizens, a senior police official was beaten to death by some staffers of a private mental health hospital in Dhaka after the officer went to receive treatment there.

Six people, including the managing director of a hospital, were arrested for the murder.

This came after seizure of recordings of CCTV footage that showed the police official was being assaulted by seven staffers inside a room of the hospital.

According to reports, the incident took place at Mind Aid hospital in Adabar on Monday.

The deceased was identified as senior assistant superintendent of Police (ASP) Anisul Karim, who was dragged into a room and thrown on the ground.

The video footages showed three employees climbing on his back, two others holding his legs and two more tying his hands.

An eyewitness said Anisul was assaulted and became unconscious. Sensing danger, accomplices splashed on his face but even he remained unmoved.

After sometime, two women, who were wearing apron, were seen pumping on his chest.

He was working at the traffic department of Barisal Metropolitan Police.

Police, meanwhile, detained six people including the managing director of the hospital.

Family members of Anisul said he got him admitted to the hospital around 11:30am on Monday when the authorities handed him over to kin again in an unconscious state after sometime.

Anisul was later taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hospital where he declared dead by the on-duty physician.

A resident of Kapasia upazila in Gazipur, Anisul Karim was a father of one child. Mrityunjay Dey, additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Tejgaon Division, said police have begun investigating the matter.

One of the colleagues of the deceased police official said Anisul, an official of BCS 31st batch, was mentally disturbed as he did not get promotion to additional superintendent of police though many officers of his batch and even of 33rd BCS batch got promoted.
