Bangladesh court allows jailed rape convict and victim to marry

A Bangladesh court passed an order paving the way for the marriage of a man, who was sentenced to life for raping his cousin, on the promise of wedding.

The panel of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman asked Rajshahi Central Jail superintendent on Thursday to arrange for the marriage after both sides agreed to the wedlock.

The court was hearing a bail petition of the convict while the woman was also present.

Both are cousins and from Rajshahi’s Godagari.

The woman, who was 14 years old in 2011, was raped by her cousin brother on the promise of marriage.

She became pregnant with his child, but he refused to marry her. When their family members attempt to find a solution failed out a solution, she filed a case on October 25 the same year.

A Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Rajshahi

A case was framed against the man on Jan 29, 2012 and sentenced him to life in prison on Jun 12 the same year.

SM Shahed Chowdhury, the lawyer for the convict, said the convict recently filed a petition for bail, adding the bail was necessary because the victim and the convict agreed to marry.
